New Games and Saved Games

Starting a New or Different Game

To play a new game of the same kind of solitaire, just choose New Game from the File menu, or type ‚åòN. Your old game will end, and the new game will be laid out for you.

To play a different solitaire, choose the one you want from the Games menu.

You can only have one game going at a time, so when you start a new game your old game will end. (But you can use the Save or Save As… commands to save it for later if you like.)

Auto-saved Games

By default, your current game will be saved when you quit. The next time you start Solitaire Till Dawn, the same game will automatically resume. If you’d rather not have your games automatically saved and resumed, uncheck the Automatically Save Game At Quit checkbox in the Preferences window.

Saving and Resuming Games

When you end a game, Solitaire Till Dawn will usually ask you if you want to save it. You can choose to save the game, or discard it, or change your mind and keep playing. You can also save a game at any time by choosing Save or Save As from the File menu.

To resume a saved game, choose Open from the File menu and select the saved-game file. You can also resume a saved game by double-clicking the saved-game file’s icon in the Finder. Saved-game files are never automatically deleted, so remember to drag them to the Trash when you’re done with them.

Solitaire Till Dawn will not ask you about saving the game if you haven’t made any moves yet, or if you’ve already won the game, or if you’ve turned off Show “Save Game?” Reminders in your preferences, or if you’re quitting and the game will be automatically saved.

Game IDs

Every game has a unique game ID. A game ID consists of the game’s name and a number, for example “Klondike 2982344657” or “Canfield 73994721”. If you know a game’s ID, you can re-create that same game from scratch at any time by using the “New Game by ID” command in the File menu.

You can get the ID for your current game by choosing Get Game ID from the File menu. The Get Game ID command will show you a small window that displays the game ID for the game you currently have open. A button in that window lets you copy that game ID into the clipboard, so that you can paste it elsewhere - into an email message sent to a friend, for example.

Using game IDs you can organize tournaments: by having every player enter the same game IDs, they will all be able to play the exact same games. Or you can send the game ID for a particularly tough game to a friend, to see how well they do with it.

To send a game ID to a friend, here’s what you do:

1. While playing the game, choose Get Game ID from the File menu.
2. Click the button "Copy to Clipboard" in the Game ID window.
3. Paste into an email message, and send the message to your friend.

When your friend receives your message, she should:

1. Copy the game ID from your message.
2. Start Solitaire Till Dawn.
3. Choose New Game by ID from the File menu.
4. Paste in the game ID from your message.
5. Click OK.
6. All set - now just play the game!
